Daily Dose: Sylvan Esso, “PARAD(w/m)E” (Rostam Remix)

Sylvan Esso’s “PARAD(w/m)E” is the first track to follow the electronic pop duo’s Grammy-nominated 2017 record What Now (“Best Dance/Electronic Album”). The pair has now released a remix of the track by Rostam who, in addition to his time in Vampire Weekend and as a solo artist, has worked with artists including Frank Ocean, Wet and Maggie Rogers.

Back in January, the bouncy dance track was dropped into an abandoned town in its accompanying music video; the desolation emphasized the single’s apocalyptic lyrics, and now the remix adds another spin to it. Rostam chops out the intro of the original and dives right into the first verse: “Speedy, speedy, slow down time,” sings Amelia Meath, but Rostam’s answer to that is “No,” as the heavy bass amps up the momentum. As an overall piece, the remix fills the air left empty in the original. Chopping up and layering different vocal lines, the song in Rostam’s hands slides to the other end of the apocalypse’s dance spectrum—the original lets the negative reality of the words settle in (“Flowers, grass and trees all died”) while the remix embraces the breakdown sonically.
