Exclusive: Listen to Taken By Trees’ “Careless Whisper” Cover, Remixed by Björn Yttling

Taken By Trees gave George Michael’s classic “Careless Whisper” a tropical update with their recently released cover, made complete with heavy synth action, swaying Cumbian beats and backup vocals by Mr Little Jeans. Now, the song gets another innovative makeover in this exclusively Paste-premiered remix by Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John.

More isolated vocals in the Yttling version allow for the magical, tropical-meets-intergalactic chiming of trance-y synths to truly shine alongside Victoria Bergsman’s smoky voice. Bergsman may be echoing the lyrics, “I’m never gonna dance again,” but her sultry tropic-pop rhythms may have you feeling a little differently.

“There is closeness in this version, it sounds like I am right there. So bare. It is almost painful for me to listen to the verses,” Bergsman explains. “I think it is an excellent contrast to the main version by Dan Lissvik and Aaron Drake. Because that one is so layered and cushioned. This version is straightforward and stripped down but still has all of these beautiful and strong arrangements by Björn Yttling.”
