Exclusive: Tedo Stone Shares Hearty New Single, “How Do You Know When it Goes Bad?”

Georgia native Tedo Stone has shared a new single, “How Do You Know When It Goes Bad?” from his forthcoming album, Summer Sun, out on May 25 via Laser Brains.

Summer Sun is Stone’s third studio album and his first since 2015’s Marshes. in 2016, Paste highlighted Stone as The Best of What’s Next, likening his latest album Marshes to everyone from The War on Drugs and Neil Young to T. Rex and Ty Segall. Stone released a video for the somber, minimalistic title track from his forthcoming album earlier this month.

As for his brand new single, “How Do You Know When It Goes Bad,” Stone’s rollicking alt-country howls with reverberating echoes of Dinosaur Jr. as Stone shows his more vulnerable side. A “wide-eyed” Stone solicits advice—or even a sign—to figure out if his situation has turned sour, and he does so with his raw, hearty and dynamic lead vocals.

“This is one of our favorite songs off the new record to play live,” Stone says of the track. “It also happens to be one of the heavier tracks we have in our repertoire. There is also some great pedal steel work on this song by Kiffy Myers who uses the instrument in a way you wouldn’t normally expect from pedal steel.”

Summer Sun, Stone says, is an organic progression from his latest record. “It seems like the natural next step in tone when looking at how our last album, Marshes, sounded.” In regards to the overall lyrical direction of his new album, Stone says, “This song and the new album, Summer Sun, is about getting older and trying to come into a more honest sound lyrically and musically. Trying to overcome insecurities as a songwriter, and by doing that you need to step out of your comfort zone and gain that sense of freedom in creativity. The whole album is about realizing that it is time for a change.”
