Tegan and Sara Release Animated Video for Sara Bareilles’ Cover of “Floorplan”

Sara Bareilles’ voice on her cover of Tegan and Sara’s “Floorplan” is a haunting contrast to Bareilles’ own playful “Love Song”—the lyrics in “Floorplan” are “I want your lungs to stop working without me,” as an animated girl walks up to a closed door, an anxiety-inducing tunnel, flashlight in hand. But perhaps that’s just how a halfway-planned, halfway-interpreted artistic collaboration comes together, and that is certainly how the iconic The Con became the recently released The Con X: Covers. The full album includes covers by Hayley Williams of Paramore, Ryan Adams, CHVRCHES and more.

In 2007, Kristine Thune created a series of animated shorts inspired by The Con, which Tegan and Sara later discovered and fell in love with. Thune has since cut the videos with the newer versions of Tegan and Sara songs, including the Hayley Williams “Nineteen” cover and this one for “Floorplan.” You can watch the entire video in the player below—it follows a young girl exploring, delighting and feeling the darkness from old objects, memories or perhaps the caverns of her own mind. In the end it’s revealed that the little girl is the little girl inside of the artist herself.

As previously announced, proceeds from The Con X: Covers album and tour go to the Tegan and Sara Foundation, which fights for health, economic justice and representation for LGBTQ girls and women. There are two more videos coming for tracks from the covers album, so stay tuned.
