Tegan & Sara Debut Rerecorded ’90s Track “I’ll Be Back Someday”

Tegan & Sara are preparing to release their forthcoming ninth studio album Hey, I’m Just Like You, a collection of rerecorded and reimagined songs written by the duo when they were teenagers, in September, and today the duo have shared its first cut: a [seething] power-pop track titled “I’ll Be Back Someday.”

It’s clear the track has been transplanted from the ‘90s: it’s simple, led by guitars fed through clean channels and sweetened by lyrics penned by an angsty, chaotic teenager: “To the end, my friend / Oh, what a lie.” The production is clear and bright, amplifying the original sampled in the album’s trailer from a bedroom recording to a shiny, pop-punk studio cut.

“We had been begging for an electric guitar, and on our 16th birthday, we got one,” Sara recalls in a statement. “Of course, we had to share it, so it became a weapon that we stole from each other’s rooms, barricading ourselves behind locked doors with guitar in hand. Screaming over the small amplifier, we tested our voices by writing punk songs, shredding our thumbs on the strings.”

Out Sept. 27 via Sire, Hey, I’m Just Like You is now available for preorder here, and you can revisit the album’s details here. Accompanying the release of the album is the duo’s coming-of-age memoir High School, a “raw account of the music, drugs, alcohol, love and friendship” the band explored in their formative years, which you can preorder here.

The band are preparing to bring the album and memoir to life for a North American tour beginning in September. You can revisit the band’s upcoming dates here.
