We’re often not fit for the damage that might be coming. It doesn’t mean that we’re weak. Not in the least. It simply means that we’re frequently caught off-guard by the depth of the wounds. The cuts are salt-laced and the knocks are concussive, even if we were bracing and gritting our teeth — watching the impact come in from the west, blowing across the land, straight for us. Tenterhook’s Archie Faulks drafts these tender elements in a way that makes them shiver naturally, the way they would in the wild, out-of-body. He breaks these fears and apprehensions down to their granule structures and then looks them in the eye, straightening his spine as much as he can and slipping into his thickest hide. A toughening only does so much and there’s always a need for more mercy. There’s always a need for more fellowship, companionship and empathy.
