Fruit Bats Get to “The Bottom of It” with Opening Track from New Album Gold Past Life
Photo by Annie BeedyFruit Bats, helmed by singer/songwriter Eric D. Johnson, have released “The Bottom of It,” the breezy opening track from their forthcoming album Gold Past Life, out June 21 on their new label Merge Records.
Johnson says in a statement that the track is “a song about simple victories, told a little bit through the notion of finding strange and fortuitous totems (round stones, turkey feathers, dead deer) and keeping them as trophies.”
Johnson also spoke to the influence the subconscious had on his dreamlike new album: “Some of these songs are directed at specific people, some at amalgams of people, and lots at myself, or the subconscious version of myself—that version like how they say you’re every single character in your dreams.”
