Earlier this summer, dream-pop darlings the Marías released their latest LP, Submarine, and songs like “Run Your Mouth,” “No One Noticed” and “Real Life” were immediately catchy standouts. But it’s “Lejos de Ti” that sets the whole project apart from their 2021 debut, CINEMA. It’s a softer rumination on being separated from someone you love, and bandleader María Zardoya took to the mountains of Lake Tahoe, California to shoot the arctic music video—and to fully embody the spirit of loneliness as she sings, “El frío, la noche / Siempre me acuerdo de ti / Miles de canciones / Siempre me acuerdo de ti.” (“The cold, the night / I always remember you / Thousands of songs / I always remember you.”) Once again, masterfully dissecting the pain of love from a new angle, Zardoya’s ethereal voice commands the track, wistfully drifting through the snowstorm in search of an absent lover.

The Marías took the Fox Theater stage in Oakland two nights in a row last month, and Paste was on the scene capturing the action. The band powered through an incredible 27-song set, including everything from “Un millón” to “Love You Anyway” to a rousing cover of the Cardigans’ “Lovefool.” It all culminated in a two-part encore that climaxed with a rendition of “Cariño.” Check out our photographer Kris Lori Fuentes Cortes‘s gallery from the show below.
