Watch The Marías’ Video for Their Cover of Britney Spears’ ” … Baby One More Time”

On Tuesday, The Marías released a new video for their cover of Britney Spears hit ”…Baby One More Time.”

The Marías—lead singer and backing guitarist María, drummer and producer Josh Conway, lead guitarist Jesse Perlman, and keyboardist Edward James—are a Los Angeles-based psychedelic-soul group who fuse elements of indie, dream-pop, jazz and funk.

María’s soft and sultry vocals coincide with jazzy percussion, delicate synthesizers and hypnotic electric guitar tones in their bedroom pop-esque cover of Spears’ 1999 global hit song, ”…Baby One More Time.”

The cover’s official music video, directed and edited by Ian Lipton and María, depicts a hazy, blurred road trip. Each band member is dressed in a monochromatic outfit as scenes show them driving through open roads in a convertible with a California license plate. María is seen swaying to her harmonies in a field, with vintage filters and visuals encompassing the video.

This cover is the band’s first new music of 2019. Previously, they recorded two LPs, Superclean, Vol. I and Superclean, Vol. II, in 2017 and 2018, respectively. They also collaborated with New York City-based indie band Triathalon on “Drip,” a smooth track released last year.

The Marías were initially formed in 2016 by María and Conway, who are a couple and record much of their music in their own home. Along with their bandmates, they are known to write “love letters” to fans and first gained traction in the indie scene with their bilingual lyrics. María often pays homage to her Puerto Rican heritage with Spanish lyrics and song titles.

The Marías will embark on tour this year, beginning their “Mission to Jupiter Summer Tour in Atlanta at Aisle 5 on July 10 and concluding it in Seattle at The Crocodile on Aug. 1. In addition, they will play several music festivals this year, notably Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Ky., on July 13 and the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco on Aug. 9.
