The Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-López Will Release 12 Solo Albums This Year

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is often most heard and seen playing with his similarly big-haired pal Cedric-Bixler Zavala in At The Drive-In, Antemasque and formerly, The Mars Volta.

Next week, Rodriguez-López will release his first studio album of 2016, and will immediately follow it up with another 11 albums, putting out a new one every two weeks.

That’s right: Rodriguez-López will release bi-weekly albums for the rest of the year, starting with Sworn Virgins on July 15 and ending with Some Need It Lonely on Dec. 16.

According to Pitchfork, Rodriguez-López wrote and recorded the new material over a span of six years between 2008 and 2013 while he was living in Mexico and Texas.

The albums will be released via Ipecac Recordings, the label of Faith No More frontman Mike Patton. All will be available digitally, while some will be available for purchase as CDs at forthcoming Rodriguez-Lopez shows. Eventually, all 12 release will be collected in a limited edition boxset.

“I can’t think of a better home for these records or of another label crazy enough to put out this much material,” said Rodriguez-López in a statement. “The series also owes its blood to the hard work and talents of Jon Debaun and Chris Common, who diligently scoured through endless hard drives to find these albums and provide such stellar mixes.”

Rodriguez-López has always been a prolific artist. During the same five year span he recorded his 12 forthcoming albums, he also just happened to release 23 solo records under his own name, as well as three Mars Volta albums.
