In a win for Reddit detectives everywhere, rumors last week that a crop of mysterious posters scattered across London were signaling the return of The Rolling Stones have turned out to be true. The band announced this morning that their 25th studio album—whose name the group is still keeping under wraps—will come out this July. The record’s lead single, titled “Rough and Twisted,” will be released tomorrow.
As such, I can answer my own question: the Stones were, in fact, not taking the piss when they oversaw the creation of a website for their old pseudonymous band The Cockroaches, complete with an Easter-egg reference to an infamous Keith Richards shirt. A clock on the website is set to 1:41 p.m. on April 11, but “Rough and Twisted” is set to be a white-label vinyl exclusive. No plans for streaming have been confirmed yet. Times writer Will Hodgkinson, who’s already heard the new tune, promises it’s a classic Stones number—complete with “a killer riff, a rambunctious harmonica solo from Mick Jagger, [and] a devil-may-care spirit.”
The band’s last LP, 2023’s Hackney Diamonds, was a raucous, rowdy LP that came for many as a welcome relief from an 18-year moratorium on new music by the band. Producer Andrew Watt, who helped imbue the record with its infectious energy, is set to return on “Rough and Twisted.” And that’s not all: the Stones have announced they have ten additional songs in the bag for after July’s record. They may be cutting down on a notoriously exhausting tour schedule, though, with a spokesperson confirming that “the Rolling Stones will play when they decide to, not before.” As of now, there are no concerts planned.
