His statement comes in the wake of The Smiths‘ former guitarist Johnny Marr filing a trademark claim on the band’s name in order to protect the band’s intellectual property rights from third parties attempting to take advantage of the lack of clarity in ownership. Marr reportedly signed an agreement last year to share rights with Morrissey, but it’s not clear that he ever got Morrissey to respond.
Now, The Smith’s former lead singer is offering to sell his portion of the band to a lucky bidder. That’s right, whether you’re a jumped-up pantry boy who never knew his place or a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg, you can own a significant portion of “Frankly, Mr. Shankly,” “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” and “Some Girls Are Bigger than Others” if the price is right. Morrissey lists the assets as his portion of:
1. The name ‘The Smiths’, as created by Morrissey.
2. All Smiths artwork, as created by Morrissey.
3. All Smiths merchandising rights.
4. All Smiths songs lyrically / musically.
5. All synchronisation rights.
6. All Smiths recordings.
7. All contractual rights for Smiths publishing.
