The Weeknd Breaks Spotify Record for Most Streams in One Day

Following the release of his third studio album, Starboy, Spotify has confirmed that The Weeknd has set the new record for most streams on the service in one day.

“Spotify’s continued support of The Weeknd has now reached historic proportions and also reinforces the tremendous growth of global streaming,” Monte Lipman, chairman and co-founder of Republic Records, wrote in a statement.

Justin Bieber previously held the record, as his music was streamed 36 million times on Nov. 13, 2015. Spotify has yet to release the figures for The Weeknd’s new streaming benchmark, but Spotify Global Head of Creative Services Troy Carter congratulated Abel Tesfaye in a statement, saying: “We’re proud to have partnered with The Weeknd, his management and Republic Records on a phenomenal album.”

Starboy was released Friday, Nov. 25 via Republic Records and includes features from Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar and more. You can hear six songs from the album in The Weeknd’s short film Mania here, or pad The Weeknd’s Spotify stats further here.
