Theo Lawrence is an Austin, Texas-based Frenchman who makes good, worn-in music with a Charlie Rich voice and Ray Price songcraft. Country music has always been his greatest love, even if his earliest bands didn’t play it. Then, Theo met Thibault Ripault and learned how to lean into his singer-songwriter affections all the way. Chérie and Pickin’ & Singin’ are brilliant LPs. His newest one, Havin’ A Talk, was made with Melissa Carper and is the 21st-century version of Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell. During this year’s South by Southwest festival, Theo graciously hosted us in his living room for a morning of tunes and conversation. After recording a Paste Session, he laid down two cover songs for Daytrotter: Ben E. King’s “Young Boy Blues” and Joe South’s “Walk A Mile In My Shoes.”
