On February 21, Third Man Records will unveil a reissue of Ted Lucas’ eponymous 1975 LP (referred to as OM by Lucas’ record label 50 years ago). This is just the first chapter in a year-long celebration of Lucas’ music by Third Man, who plan to release a bevy of never-before-heard material provided to them by his family.
Given Lucas’ status as a Detroit legend, it’s no surprise that fellow hometown hero Jack White and his crew at Third Man are itching to spread the wealth of his art with the world. Lucas was trained on sitar by Ravi Shankar and, for some, was on the same pedestal as folk giants. He was in Reprise-signed bands like Spike-Drivers and the Misty Wizards in the 1960s, but OM is the only solo record Lucas ever finished. And very few people have heard it… until now, that is. In the decades since, contemporary names like Father John Misty and the Blind Boys of Alabama have taken a shine to Lucas’ work and covered him.
Lucas passed away in 1992 and, according to a press release, much of OM‘s original pressing “remained in boxes” until then. The previously unheard song “Nobody Loves Me Like My Baby Does” is out today, and it’s a doozy—a folk track so potent it sounds of this current moment yet bound to some other, alien era entirely.
