Daily Dose: Trevor Powers, “Clad In Skin”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

It’s been more than two years since Trevor Powers called it quits on his solo project, Youth Lagoon. Now, he’s preparing to release his first album under his own name. Out Aug. 17 on Baby Halo, Mulberry Violence already appears to point due east of Youth Lagoon’s poignant, drowsy musings. “Clad In Skin,” a new single from the album out today, is louder, bouncier and more strident than anything in the Youth Lagoon catalog. Listen to the wild new track below.

Powers’ experimental song incorporates snappy keys and an ever-so-clever saxophone solo that would probably impress Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. While quiet at times, it’s a refreshing bop, one you may be tempted to add to your “Songs of the Summer” mix.

“Clad In Skin” also arrives with a twin, the much more muted (and Youth Lagoon-neighboring) track, “Squelch,” which you can also listen to below. Of the forthcoming record’s 10 tracks, we’ve already been granted access to six. First came “Plaster Saint” and “Ache.” After those, Powers also shared “XTQ Idol” and “Dicegame” which you can listen to here and here, respectively.

Again, Mulberry Violence is out Aug. 17, and you can pre-order it here.

Further down, listen to Youth Lagoon’s 2012 Daytrotter session.
