Jenny Lewis Joins Nashville Singer Tristen in ’60s Bubblegum Pop-Inspired “Glass Jar” Video

Hailing originally from a small suburb outside of Chicago, Tristen is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter and 2010 Paste Best of What’s Next pick. Today she premiered the video for her newest single “Glass Jar,” which features everyone’s favorite Americana-tinged singer, Jenny Lewis. The song is a four-minute psychedelic, quirky avant-folk gem and appears on Sneaker Waves, Tristen’s first original release since Caves LP (2013).

Between releases, Tristen has been busy, however—she released a book of poetry called Saturnine, toured with Vanessa Carlton and The Weeks, and has been part of the backing band for the aforementioned Lewis for the past two years.

For fans of Jenny Lewis and all of her side-projects, “Glass Jar” parallels a lot of the same aesthetic and is sure to be well-liked. The music video, directed by Casey Pierce, pays homage to the jangly, fun and melodic ‘60s bubblegum-era, as Tristen is cast in bright pastel lights while wearing the boho hippie-chic clothing of the time. As the video continues, her image is mirrored side-to-side evoking a kaleidoscopic feeling as an isolated Tristen dances by herself, essentially in a giant glass jar—Tristen sings, “I don’t have to say goodbye / You don’t get to see me cry / You put me in a glass jar and tap, tap, tap to see how I move,” which highlights the overall darker tone of the song, hidden amid layers of airy guitar and synth vibes.
