Trombone Shorty Details His Blue Note Debut Parking Lot Symphony, Shares Lead Single

It was announced last month that Trombone Shorty, the highly praised New Orleans bandleader who’s made a name for himself over the last decade due to his energetic live shows, was signed to the legendary Blue Note records, who have put out music from most of the greatest names in jazz history, and would be putting out a new album in April. Now that album is starting to take shape within his announcement today that the record will be out April 28 and titled Parking Lot Symphony.

If that title paints a particularly striking picture for you, that’s likely its intention. There’s a sense that despite the immense musical ability on display from Shorty and his band Orleans Avenue, the music on this record is still ultimately born from the streets and the community they come from. According to a press release, fans can expect “multitudes of sound—from brass band blare and deep-groove funk to bluesy beauty and hip-hop/pop swagger—and plenty of emotion,” emphasizing the kind of simultaneous honor and disregard for genre that Shorty has displayed throughout his career. While the album, produced by Chris Seefried, promises a fresh batch of new tunes from Trombone Shorty, it also sees him tackling tunes by some of his inspirations, with covers of the late Allen Toussaint’s “Here Come the Girls” and legendary funk outfit The Meters’ “It Ain’t No Use.”

After finishing up his current gig opening shows for the Red Hot Chili Peppers during sold-out runs at places like Madison Square Garden and the Staples Center, Shorty won’t be spending much time off the stage. He has a New York City album release show scheduled for April 24, before heading to his hometown for his third annual Treme Threauxdown at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans on April 29, which will feature Andra Day and Preservation Hall Jazz Band, among other special guests, and which marks the first night of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He has also been given the honor of performing that historic festival’s closing set on May 7. He then begins touring in earnest with a series of dates on the East Coast in June and a stop at Red Rocks in August before heading west for a co-headlining tour with St. Paul & the Broken Bones.

All of Trombone Shorty’s tour dates can be found below, and ticket information can be found here. Also, see below to hear lead single “Here Come the Girls,” along with a 2011 Daytrotter session and the album art and tracklisting for Parking Lot Symphony.
