Ex-Turnstile guitarist now facing attempted first-degree murder charge

When former TURNSTILE guitarist Brady Ebert was arrested last month, following his alleged attack on frontman Brendan Yates’ father, he faced a second-degree assault charge, an offense that carries up to 30 years in prison. The attack left Bill Yates, 79, with serious injuries, including a broken leg. He was hospitalized for several weeks but has since been discharged and is continuing his recovery at home.

However, a grand jury indictment last Thursday escalated the charges against Ebert to attempted first-degree murder, which could result in, if convicted, a life sentence. Members of the Yates family informed police that Ebert drove to their property, screamed obscenities and honked his horn, struck Bill with his 2001 Buick, and fled the scene. Authorities are still determining Ebert’s motives.

Meanwhile, TURNSTILE opened their Coachella set last month with an old video of Bill, in which he says, “I’m the proud father of Brendan. They’re all sons of mine. All the fans out there: we love you, and TURNSTILE loves you. Enjoy the ride.” Ebert was with TURNSTILE from its 2010 inception until his departure in 2022. Though the band maintained that the decision to remove him was amicable, they later cited a pattern of harmful behavior and threats from Ebert as the reason behind his departure. English guitarist Meg Mills replaced him. Earlier this year, Ebert was also ejected from his new band, The S.E.T., after posting inflammatory comments about his former TURNSTILE bandmates on social media.

Brady Ebert has maintained innocence in the attempted murder case, claiming that surveillance video will exonerate him of the crime. “This is pure self-defense,” he previously stated. “They’re the attackers.” Ebert is currently being held without bail and is set to appear in court on May 8.
