He is The Grinch, and he lives in Whoville. Who are you?
Tyler, the Creator has released the second of two tracks he created for Illumination’s new rendition of The Grinch, out in theaters today, Nov. 9. Last month, Tyler released a cover of Thurl Ravenscroft’s iconic “You’re A Mean One,” recorded for the original animated special in 1966. Today, he released an original track he wrote for the film, “I Am The Grinch,” and it’s certainly interesting.
Paired with the release of The Grinch (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), out today via Columbia Records, the track is written from the perspective of the one and only mean one. Lyrically, unsurprisingly, it’s all about the Grinch bragging about how he is the baddest of them all, with a chorus of other voices agreeing. It’s in a similar vein to “Despicable Me,” written by Pharrell for the Illumination film of the same name, except it doesn’t work quite as well. It’s catchy, but it’s also super weird.
The oddest part of the venture is the accompanying lyric video, which shows a faceless green fluffball—presumably the Grinch—getting into all kinds of mischief. Check it out below.
