Underoath formed 27 years ago in Tampa, and their membership has changed heavily over the last two decades—drummer-singer Aaron Gillespie is the only remaining original player. But, the band has remained a heavy presence in metalcore and post-hardcore since abandoning their Christian metal origins years ago, earning RIAA certifications, Billboard 200 placements and critical acclaim in the process. Their lineup settled into itself at the turn of the millennium, featuring Gillespie, Christopher Dudley, Timothy McTague, Grant Brandell and Spencer Chamberlain. In June 2004, Underoath released their big breakthrough record They’re Only Chasing Safety, which went Gold and sent them to Warped Tour and put them on bills with Coheed and Cambria and The Used.

This winter, Underoath have been touring America in celebration of They’re Only Chasing Safety turning 20 years old. They’ll be heading over to Australia in March before returning to the States for a West Coast run to close out the spring. On December 12th, they made a stop at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, playing They’re Only Chasing Safety in full before rocking through a fan-voted encore that included tracks like “Breathing in a New Mentality,” “Generation No Surrender” and “Writing on the Walls.”
