Unknown Mortal Orchestra Share New Single “Not in Love We’re Just High”

On Tuesday, Unknown Mortal Orchestra released the second single off their forthcoming album Sex & Food, due out April 6 via Jagjaguwar. Following the release of the first single, “American Guilt,” the new single, titled “Not in Love We’re Just High,” follows the narrative of a drug-induced couple who reach the realization that, as the song title explains, they are not in love but simply high. While on the surface this news may seem sad and chaotic, the song also suggests that this realization could be quite liberating.

A press release detailing the announcement describes the musical elements that make up “Not in Love We’re Just High” as follows: “The tension of the song’s chaotic introduction is given relief by the gorgeous repeated Wurlitzer chords that make up the backbone of the song. The song’s steady build adds to the ecstatic feeling of liberation born from this epiphany.”

The music video for this new single, released alongside “Not in Love We’re Just High,” features a lonely pianist, performing for a non-existent crowd in an empty room that’s riddled with flies. The same iconography was found in the music video to “American Guilt,” released earlier this month.
