Vampire Weekend Share Final Father of the Bride Singles, “This Life” and “Unbearably White”

Ezra Koenig and company have made good on their word by delivering monthly (or thereabouts) two-song releases leading up to the arrival of their new double album, Father of the Bride, due out May 3 on Columbia Records. The last of those double-single drops came Thursday morning as Vampire Weekend released “This Life” and “Unbearably White,” the fifth and sixth singles from their forthcoming fourth album.

“This Life” is an incongruously carefree-sounding ode to a dysfunctional relationship (“You’ve been cheating on, cheating on me / I’ve been cheating on, cheating on you”) that boasts backing vocals from Danielle Haim, with guitar from Koenig’s Beats 1 radio show Time Crisis collaborator Jake Longstreth. Koenig and Ariel Rechtshaid produced the song with additional production from Dave Macklovitch.

“Unbearably White,” the title of which you can write your own joke about, was written by Koenig, who also produced it alongside Rechtshaid, with additional production from BloodPop. This second single of this pair is far more subdued, with Koenig sounding genuinely rueful as he sings, “Baby, I love you / But that is not enough,” using the unbearable whiteness of a snowy mountain peak as a metaphor for romantic overexposure.

Today’s new tracks follow January’s “Harmony Hall” and “2021,” and March’s “Sunflower” and “Big Blue.” Vampire Weekend have also rolled out music videos for “Harmony Hall” and “Sunflower,” directed by Emmett Malloy and Jonah Hill, respectively, during this long and active album cycle. They announced a tour in support of their new album in late January, and have since added a number of summer festival sets to their itinerary, including a performance at Glastonbury in late June.
