Waxahatchee has released the Great Thunder EP, out now through Merge. The EP is a collection of reimagined songs from earlier in singer Katie Crutchfield’s career, when she was recording with her band Great Thunder while working on her Waxahatchee albums Cerulean Salt and Ivy Tripp. Great Thunder was produced by Brad Cook (Hiss Golden Messenger, War on Drugs) and recorded at Justin Vernon’s April Base Studio in Wisconsin.
The EP follows 2017’s full-length Out In The Storm. While recording Great Thunder, Crutchfield says she found herself turning away from her previous album’s rock-oriented instrumentation, moving back towards her roots in folk and country songwriting. “I would say that it is a complete 180 from the last record: super stripped-down, quiet, and with me performing solo, it’s a throwback to how I started,” writes Crutchfield. “Overall, the EP is a warm, kind of vibey recording.”
Crutchfield will take Waxahatchee out on the road solo for the remainder of the year. A full list of dates can be found below.
