WHY? Share Three New Songs via Tatiana Maslany-Starring Video

WHY?, the distinctly Midwestern indie hip-hop/rock outfit, shared three new songs, a video and a set of North American tour dates on Wednesday afternoon. The songs are called “Apogee,” “The Rash” and “Peel Free,” and all three songs are collected in the video, which is titled “I. I may come out a broken yolk, I may come out on saddle.”

Fittingly, the music is as sonically ambitious as the video’s title. Moving from airy keys to an ominously static soundscape, the song finally lands in the sphere of lounge music, with a vibraphone and a spaced-out drum pad bringing the song to its conclusion. Frontman Yoni Wolf waxes poetic as he tries to escape from the trappings of his past with lines like, “But I was born in spring / the year Jupiter got its rings / singing ‘I will peel free.’”

Much like the song, the video, directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, revels in a free-associative logic. Starring Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany as a mother with a newborn child and utilizing home-video footage, “I. I may come out a broken yolk, I may come out on saddle” journeys through Wolf’s headspace as he reflects on his childhood.

“I. I may come out a broken yolk, I may come out on saddle” is out now via Joyful Noise Recordings. Watch the video below, then keep scrolling to find WHY?’s fall tour dates. While you’re looking for a stop near you, go ahead and revisit WHY?’s 2011 Daytrotter Session.
