Watch Wilco Play Hide and Seek in Their “Everyone Hides” Video

Ahead of their forthcoming 11th studio album Ode to Joy, Wilco have shared another new song, “Everyone Hides.” The tightly coiled introvert’s anthem is ironically accompanied by what frontman Jeff Tweedy calls “the first promotional video to feature Wilco as a living, breathing band of humans in close to 20 years.”

“Everyone Hides” is the second single off Ode to Joy after “Love Is Everywhere (Beware),” and it zigs where that song zagged: Where “Love Is Everywhere (Beware)” galvanized the listener to fight back against complacency, “Everyone Hides” acknowledges that stepping up is scary. Sometimes, each of us just wants to shy away, stepping instead into an imaginary world we wish we lived in, even if we lose ourselves there. The new single’s deftly synchronized instrumentation, too, evokes the concept of concealing one’s true self—it’s as if all the song’s elements are standing in single file and all we can see is one shape, a unified whole with countless layers of identity folded in.

The song’s playful music video, created by Picture Show Films, features the band performing their new song together at their Chicago recording studio, The Loft (where they recorded Ode to Joy), only to break into a game of hide and seek 40-some-odd seconds in. While his bandmates fan out across the city, hiding everywhere from Wrigley Field to Marina City, the towers famously pictured on Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album cover, Tweedy opts to stay home instead of seeking, ordering food and kicking back on the couch. Only after a nap does he find the fortitude to step out onto the Loft’s roof and rejoin his bandmates, seeing their “Everyone Hides” performance through to the end.

Tweedy expanded further on the band’s music video appearance in a statement:

Maybe for obvious reasons we’ve avoided putting ourselves forward in this way and have tried to play to our strengths musically or, I don’t know, maybe we’ve just been lazy … Or suspicious of expenditures outside of our focus on album making. For whatever reason this time around we just said f**k it and had a blast.

In addition to releasing their new single, Wilco have announced a number of new tour dates, including the return of Winterlude, the band’s hometown holiday residency, which will take place at the Chicago Theatre on Dec. 15-16 and 18-19. They’ve also added a three-night stand at the Palace Theatre in St. Paul, Minn., on Nov. 22-24. Tickets go on sale this Friday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. ET.
