If there’s one person whose heart is burning in a Young Kato song, there are no fewer than a dozen more whose hearts could be doing the same thing. If there’s one person ready to take a plunge in a Young Kato song, there are no fewer than three times that many anxiously anticipating what that’s going to look like – will it be clean, will it be messy, will it move them or will it make them back away and think twice about what they had in mind for themselves?
Every song that comes from this band, whose members homes are split between Cheltenham and Birmingham in Great Britain, is steeped with sweeping rushes of blood, of bursts and releases. The characters that lead singer Tommy Wright brings to life with his urgent singing style feel as if they had every intention of planning a jailbreak, for TONIGHT, at MIDNIGHT, can’t be tomorrow, HAS TO BE TONIGHT, they HAVE to get out of this, whether it’s jail or just one of those emotional prisons that typically make someone feel worse off. These are people who have distinct feelings about their homes, about the people they love, the people they thought loved them, the people they might love some day and what they might or might not stand for. Wright sings, “My fists are clenched, my body’s poised/I’m not going anywhere, anyway.” It sounds defiant, as if he really is braced for some kind of physical fight, but more than likely, it’s one of those psychological tussles that needs attention.
It’s when there’s nothing outward that could even be solved with fists or sturdiness that fighting feels like the one thing you wish you could turn to in order to make everything feel better. If only one could just bloody something, if only one could pound something or bust a hole into the drywall and make everything better as it sits. Nothing like that exists. These are dramatic times and emotional relationships that give you no choice but to insist upon something illogical coming along to fix things. You’re not going to be able to fix burning hearts with fists or smarts. It’s something else.
