Daily Dose: Yoya, “The Bloom”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Alt-pop band Yoya make feel-good songs that are kitschy and bright, but deceptively cheery; on new single “The Bloom,” Alex Pfender sings, “we smile as it all goes to pieces.” “The Bloom” is the lead single from the band’s new album, The Half Turn, out July 20 via New Professor Records.

Today, in addition to announcing The Half Turn, the band are unleashing their new video for “The Bloom,” directed by Zach Johnston. Of the colorful clip, Pfender says, “Most of our past videos rely on abstract art delivered via DIY machinations; ‘The Bloom’ features us more as actors, living and striving in the world that Zach helped us to create.”

Yoya’s Noah Dietterich adds: “We sit with our instruments on the concrete banks of the LA River, but we don’t play them, we just scroll through an infinite blank feed, as the water flows through an infinite concrete channel. We exhaust ourselves pedaling bikes that go nowhere. It’s a derelict world that’s waiting on ‘The Bloom,’ studying itself in the mirror, though we still find joy at home together making music.”
