Former GOP Representative: America May Be Safer from Trump If the Democrats Win the House in 2018
Photo by Chip Somodevilla/GettyDavid Jolly represented Florida’s 13th district from 2014 to 2017. He received an A rating from the NRA, so it’s not like he has made a career out of opposing Republican orthodoxy. He was on Lawrence O’Donnell’s MSNBC show last night, and he unleashed a quote that is sure to reverberate through the halls of the White House.
“I personally as a Republican in the past few weeks have wondered, is the republic safer if Democrats take over the House in 2018. I raised that issue with the leading Republican in D.C. last week, and the remarkable thing is he had been thinking exactly the same thing. This is a president that needs a greater check on his power than Republicans in Congress have offered.”
“We do know that we have a president who very well might put this nation at risk and this Republican Congress has done nothing to check his power. Democrats could, and we might be better off as a republic if they take the House in 2018.”
He also wrote an op-ed earlier this year titled “A Primary Challenge to Trump Could Save the Republican Party” in the Tampa Bay Times. There is a growing chorus of Republican voices who do not have to worry about their constituents ditching them for the big orange goblin haunting the Oval Office, and they will be vital to helping communicate the message coming from inside the insane asylum known as Congress.
