Multiple Republican Senators Are Unamused by Trump’s Shameless Mockery of Christine Blasey Ford’s Testimony

President Donald Trump’s public mockery of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford at a Mississippi rally on Tuesday night was immediately criticized by critical Republican senators, who will vote later this week on whether to elevate Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Trump ridiculed Ford for not knowing the answers to some of the questions posed by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Ford alleges that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school, accusations which Kavanaugh fervently denies.

“How did you get home? I don’t remember,” joked Trump. “How’d you get there? I don’t remember. Where is the place? I don’t remember. How many years ago was it? I don’t know.” The crowd welcomed Trump’s insensitive imitation, greeting his remarks with uproarious laughter and applause.

“I don’t know. I don’t know,” Trump carried on. “What neighborhood was it in? I don’t know. Where’s the house? I don’t know. Upstairs, downstairs—where was it?”

But Trump didn’t stop there: “I don’t know — but I had one beer,” he said. “That’s the only thing I remember.” These comments come after Dr. Ford has publicly relayed much of which she remembers from that night, most notably the alleged assault itself, Kavanaugh’s laughter, fearing for her life and her experiences post-trauma.

Multiple Republican senators have since commented on Trump’s tasteless wisecracks.

“There’s no time and no place for remarks like that. To discuss something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right. It’s just not right. I wish he hadn’t had done it,” Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) told NBC on Today. He added: “It’s kind of appalling.”

Likewise, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) denounced Trump’s comments, telling CNN that they “were just plain wrong.”

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) had a similar response, remarking that Trump’s words were “wholly inappropriate, and in my view unacceptable.” Asked if the President’s attack would affect her vote, she said only, “I am taking everything into account.”

Even Sen. Lindsey “You Came to the Wrong Town at the Wrong Time” Graham (R-S.C.) seemed unamused. “I would tell him to knock it off—it’s not helpful,” Graham said at the Atlantic Festival in Washington. But he did also add: “Everything [Trump] said was factually true.”
