Trump’s Advice, Once: “If There’s a Concrete Wall in Front of You, Go Through It”

As the government shutdown stretches into its 20th day, menacing federal works and threatening to break the record for the longest government shutdown in American history, should it persist until Saturday, President Trump offers some words of encouragement: “If there’s a concrete wall in front of you, go through it, go under it, go around it. But get to the other side of that wall.”

The quote comes from a recently surfaced video of a 2004 commencement speech delivered by Trump. While his inspirational offerings have obviously been taken out of context here, there’s no denying the irony of his metaphor. Perhaps it’s why the president veered away from his insistence on a concrete wall to “artistically designed steel slats.”
