John McCain’s Family Says He Will Discontinue Medical Treatment for Brain Cancer

On Friday, John McCain’s family announced in a statement that the 81-year-old Republican Senator from Arizona will discontinue medical treatment for his brain cancer. The family’s statement is below:
“Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: He had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious. In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment.”
As the Times notes, McCain has been receiving treatment since the summer of 2017, and has not been an active member of the Senate in 2018.
McCain has a long and storied political career that includes winning the 2008 Republican nomination for president. Before he left Washington, he was almost single-handedly responsible for scuttling his own party’s attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
