Attorney Michael Avenatti has been arrested and charged with federal crimes on both coasts. The bombastic lawyer was taken into custody Monday morning in Manhattan for attempting to extort upwards of $20 million from Nike by accusing them of illegally funneling money to college and high school basketball recruits. Avenatti has also been charged with wire and bank fraud in California for embezzling a client’s money and defrauding a bank with fake tax returns.
Shortly before being taken into custody Monday, Avenatti tweeted that he would be holding a press conference on Tuesday to disclose the details of the college basketball scandal, which he said involved the “highest levels of Nike” and “some of the biggest names in college basketball.”
Tmrw at 11 am ET, we will be holding a press conference to disclose a major high school/college basketball scandal perpetrated by @Nike that we have uncovered. This criminal conduct reaches the highest levels of Nike and involves some of the biggest names in college basketball.
