Germany is hosting England at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund. Friendlies between these two always garner some attention but tonight has a special twist; it’s serving as a testimonial for former Arsenal man Lukas Podolski, who’s playing his last game for Germany tonight.
After being largely absent throughout the match, Podolski hit this 25-yard stunner in the 69th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. It’s a truly magnificent goal, but doing this in his last match for Die Mannschaft is something else. It’s not often that football accommodates personal narrative like this, but when it happens, it’s special.
