Sofia Coppola to Direct Short Film For Cartier

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola is teaming up with French luxury watch and jewelry brand Cartier to create a short film celebrating the re-release of the iconic Panthére watch. The film, which will launch via social media and in select theaters in June, will star Courtney Eaton (Gods of Egypt) and Brooklyn and Amanda Sudano—who, incidentally, are the daughters of late disco queen Donna Summers.

The Panthére watch, which was in production from 1983-2004, was a major breakthrough for Cartier. By combining the practicality and class-status of a timepiece with the glamour of high-end jewelry, the brand ushered in a new level of watch sex appeal. While demand for watches fell a bit with the convenience of 21st-century cellphones, they’ve since come back in a big way. In any case, Coppola is clearly a fan of the Panthére watch. “I love the era when the Panthère debuted and I think of it as glamorous and sexy, and thought about films and the women of that era,” Coppola told Business of Fashion;, discussing her inspiration for the short film. She also said she imagines the woman who wears a Panthére to be “visiting L.A. and away from work, and is enjoying the sun, romance and her friends.” We’re curious about how Coppola envisions the woman who wears an Indiglo WR 30M Easy Reader Timex. In addition to the forthcoming film, Cartier will be hosting a party in Los Angeles on May 5 to ring in the Panthére reboot. We don’t have details about who will be attending this soiree of soirees, but judging from Cartier’s last party, it’s going to be more star-studded than this Valentino Rockstud Large Quilted Shoulder Bag.
