How To Use Force Click on the New Magic Trackpad 2

Tech Features How To

Apple introduced Force Click on the new MacBooks and 2015 Macbook Pro earlier in the year. Now, they integrated into the new Magic Trackpad 2, which was released today.

Force Click is different from the traditional trackpad because it adds a different layer much like Force Touch on the Apple Watch and 3D Touch on the new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

As of now, you can only use Force Click on native OS X apps. All you have to do is just press harder than you normally would until feel a “second click”, which is the taptic engine telling you Force Click was successfully performed.

Some of the things you can do so far isn’t that much different from the things you can do. For example, you can Force Click on a file to preview it or to rename a file. Apple has compiled a list of things you can do so far.

One thing I find useful is to Force Click on a word and it’ll give you the definition or on a link to preview a website.

It took me a while to get used to the new trackpads but it does feel better than the old ones. For fun, I got my old Macbook Air out a few days ago to compare the trackpads and the old one just wasn’t the same. It just felt stiff and harder to click.

If for some reason, you feel Force Click isn’t for you, you can turn it off by going to System Preferences, click on Trackpad, and then uncheck Force Click and haptic feedback. You can also change the firmness of the click if you want to click on it softer or harder in that same settings menu.
