How to Use the iPhone 6s’ Two Best Camera Features

Tech Features How To

One of the iPhone’s biggest standout features has always been the excellent cameras it has. With the recent release of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Apple has upped the ante once again on its camera.

Not only did Apple increase the megapixel from 8 to 12, but it also included a couple of really interesting features: 4K Video and Live Photos. As for 4K Video, the iPhone 6s doesn’t come with it turned on out of the box, so you’ll want to follow these instructions to take some of this amazing video with your phone.

How to Use 4K Video

One of the new features Apple brought to the new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus is recording videos in 4K high-definition. However, because it takes up a ton of space, it is off by default.

To turn it on, go to Settings > Photos & Camera > scroll down to Record Video > tap on 4K at 30 fps.

And that’s all there is to it.

Again, 4K videos take up a lot of space (300-400MB per minute) so if you have a 16GB iPhone, I wouldn’t recommend having this feature on all the time. You can edit the 4K videos you shot with the iMovie app as well as upload it to YouTube but you would need a 4K resolution screen to be able to watch videos in all its glory.

How to Use Live Photos

The second big camera feature on the iPhone 6s is a thing Apple calls Live Photos. What Live Photos does is it extends the capture moment by 1.5 seconds before and after the picture is taken.

It is on by default so when you open the camera app, you’ll see the “live” button highlighted at the top of the screen.

To take advantage of Live Photos, hold your iPhone up pointed at the subject, hold it for a second or two, snap the picture, and keep holding your iPhone up for another two seconds.

It’s a little bit of a hassle and might take a while getting used to but it will prevent you from capturing the second you hold your iPhone up to take the photo and the second afterwards when you put it down.

Live Photos can be viewed by those with iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. Otherwise, they would see the normal image that was taken. You share them via iMessage, e-mail, iCloud Photo Sharing, or any other way you would share a regular photo.

To view, just press down lightly on the screen and your photo will come to life!

Note that audio will be recorded for Live Photos as well.

You can turn Live Photos off by hitting the “live” button on top of the camera screen.
