Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Makes History at the Olivier Awards

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child won a whopping nine trophies at the U.K.’s prestigious Olivier Awards last night, breaking records for the number of Olivier Awards won by a single production.

The show, which also received a record-breaking 11 nominations, took home nine, including awards for Best New Play, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Set Design. This makes Cursed Child the most decorated show in Olivier history—the previous record was seven, set by Matilda and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Based on the Harry Potter series sequel written by Jack Thorne and J.K. Rowling, Cursed Child is set 19 years after the end of Deathly Hallows. It follows Harry’s youngest son Albus, and his life as a Hogwart’s outcast and his friendship with Scorpius, Draco Malfoy’s son. While the book got a lukewarm reception from some critics, it sold like crazy, and the theatrical version, written by Thorne, has since garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike for its superb cast and special effects.

The Broadway-bound play will travel across the pond to the Lyric Theater in New York City in the spring of 2018. Tickets for the Broadway version of Cursed Child were already expected to go pretty fast, but now with nine Olivier Awards (which are essentially the U.K. equivalent of the Tonys) under its belt, we’re guessing tickets are going to be Hamilton-level scarce.
