Mark Ruffalo to Hit the Stage in The Price

Steppenwolf Theatre’s production of Arthur Miller’s The Price just acquired some more star power, with Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo announced to replace John Turturro in the production’s lead role. This will be the first Broadway production of the play since 1999.

The production already boasts a terrific cast, with Danny DeVito of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame, Golden Globe winner Tony Shalhoub from Monk, and Tony nominee Jessica Hecht. Set in a Manhattan brownstone apartment slated to be torn down, the play has earned mixed reviews going back as far as its first opening night. New York Times critic Clive Barnes, back in 1968, summarized his reaction by saying, “Go expecting to see a play and perhaps The Price might disappoint you. Go expecting a great evening in the theater, and it does, I think, emphatically deliver the goods.”

A 2015 Los Angeles Production of the play, however, struck a somewhat different chord with L.A. Times critic Charles McNulty, who gushed, “[The Price] explodes with the thunderous moral inquiry that has earned the author a place on the Mt. Rushmore of American playwriting.”

It’s reasonable to expect that the production will at least be a high-energy one, with director Terry Kinney at the helm. Kinney is, after all, the founder of the Steppenwolf Theater Company, described by New York Times critic Ben Brantley as “the caffeinated theatre company that performs with the kick of triple espresso.”
