Charli XCX Joins Upcoming A24/Prime Video Comedy Series

Charli XCX will be bumping our television screens very soon.

The singer-songwriter has joined the cast of the upcoming Prime Video/A24 comedy series Overcompensating in a guest starring role. The announcement follows earlier news that Charli XCX would also produce original music for the series.

Overcompensating is helmed by comedian and internet personality Benito Skinner, inspired by events from his own life. Skinner teased Charli XCX’s performance in the series on his Instagram: “WRAPPED on season 1 of Overcompensating!!!! This cast and crew are my heroes,” shared Skinner. “Oh and if you thought @charli_xcx was only doing the music…” he added. The news of Charli’s XCX performance was later confirmed by Prime Video to Deadline.

Overcompensating will follow Benny, an Idaho football player who struggles to accept his sexuality in college and overcompensates to be someone he is not. The series will be an ensemble comedy.

The A24 series will be Charli XCX’s second live-action television role, as the singer-songwriter featured in the second season of Max’s short-lived Gossip Girl reboot. She is also set to star in Gregg Araki’s upcoming erotic thriller I Want Your Sex opposite Olivia Wilde (Don’t Worry Darling) and Cooper Hoffman (Saturday Night).

Overcompensating series regulars include multi-hyphenate Wally Baram (Betty), who will serve as a supervising producer and star as Carmen, an outsider who quickly befriends Benny. Comedian Mary Beth Barone (Black Mirror) will play Grace, Benny’s older sister. The White Lotus star, Adam DiMarco, will play Grace’s boyfriend Peter. Ms. Marvel alum Rish Shah will play Miles, a potential love interest for Benny.

Recurring cast members include Alexandra Beaton (Good Witch), Kaia Gerber (Bottoms), Holmes (Welcome to Flatch), Corteon Moore (From), Maddie Phillips (Teenage Bounty Hunters), and Tomaso Sanelli (Titans). Julia Shiplett (Love Life) will portray the Queer free-spirit Mimi alongside Claire Qute (Workin’ Moms), Nell Verlaque (Big Shot), Owen Thiele (Hacks), Tommy Do (The Other Two), and newcomer Elias Azimi.

Emmy Award nominees Connie Britton and Kyle MacLachlan will play Benny’s parents, as announced by Skinner via a Tiktok dance featuring the trio bopping to Charli XCX’s song “Apple.”

It is currently unclear what role Charli XCX will play in the series, which has yet to set a premiere date.
