Coming up in April, we’ve got a series of new TV shows and movies coming to Amazon Prime. Check out our featured recommendations, and read on for the full list of new streaming content.
The Ides of March Year: 2011 Director: George Clooney Available: April 30 Early on in Ides, we learn from campaign advisor Paul Zara (Philip Seymour Hoffman) that the winner of this primary will likely be the next president of the United States. And Paul believes he’s working for the man who can take it all the way. That man is Gov. Mike Morris (Clooney), a war veteran whose message is largely anti-mainstream but seems to resonate with voters. Add Ryan Gosling and Paul Giamatti to the deep bench, and you’ve got a slick, entertaining political thriller. —Jonathan W. Hickman
Maggie Year: 2015 Director: Henry Hobson Available: April 9 After running away from home upon learning she’s one of the “infected” in this zombie thriller, Maggie (Abigail Breslin) is pursued by her father, Wade (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who’s intent on retuning her back to their rural Kansas farm, so she can live the remainder of her days amongst her family and friends. Breslin, a truly gifted young actress, delivers a bracing performance, rendering the portrait of a courageous young lady, facing her terminal illness with equal parts grace and understandable dread.—Scott Wold
The Dead Zone Year: 1983 Director: David Cronenberg Available: April 1 For a while, Stephen King novels were being made into the best horror-thriller movies around. In 1983, audiences were introduced to a young Christopher Walken playing Johnny Smith in the psychological thriller The Dead Zone. Smith is able to tell the future of a person by simply touching his or her hand. Directed by David Cronenberg, it’s a decidedly creepy, scary, and totally engaging film. Even with dated effects, The Dead Zone continues to startle audiences. —Paste
Ronin Year: 1998 Director: John Frankenheimer Available: April 1 Ronin boasts two impressive feats: some pretty memorable car chase scenes and the first known example of figure-skating sniper murder in film. Now that’s ice cold…hold your applause, please. Robert De Niro in a spy film is almost a fool-proof cinematic recipe; add the fact that the screenplay is pretty competent and the explosions explode pretty well, and Ronin quickly becomes a beloved example of espionage. —Darren Orf
