Homecoming has already received a two-season straight-to-series order at Amazon, and is clearly going to be a series to reckon with. The show, based on the popular fictional podcast of the same name from Gimlet Media, is written by podcast creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, with direction from Esmail. Roberts plays Heidi, a caseworker at a top-secret government facility, while James plays Walter Cruz, a soldier eager to return to civilian life. Cannavale enters the equation as Colin Belfast, whom Deadline describes as “the ambitious off-site supervisor of the Homecoming Initiative.”
The Homecoming podcast comprised a collage of overheard conversations, therapy sessions and telephone calls, with a star-studded cast that included Catherine Keener as the caseworker, Oscar Isaac as the soldier and David Schwimmer as the supervisor. Amy Sedaris and David Cross also lent their voices to the podcast.
Cannavale has plenty more on the docket going forward. The actor, who rocketed to prominence in 2010 via his Emmy-winning performance in season three of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, currently stars in Esmail’s Mr. Robot. Cannavale will also appear in I, Tonya (Dec. 8), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Dec. 20), Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6, 2018) and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman (TBA). Homecoming joins an extremely promising slate … and Jumanji.
Filming on the Amazon Prime Video-exclusive series begins in Los Angeles in April 2018.
