Bryan Fuller Suggests Pushing Daisies Reboot to Replace Roseanne

In case you somehow missed it, Roseanne Barr spurred her own self-imposed implosion and the subsequent cancellation of ABC’s controversial reboot of Roseanne on Monday by posting a racist tweet about former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.

Barr’s tweet caused an outpouring of reactions: Wanda Sykes quit her role as a consulting producer for the show, and ABC President Channing Dungey called Barr’s tweet “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.”

Former ABC showrunner Bryan Fuller (American Gods, Hannibal) also threw his hat into the ring on Twitter with a suggestion of what to fill Roseanne’s timeslot with, tweeting a picture from his much-beloved and quickly-snuffed dramedy Pushing Daisies starring Lee Pace and Kristin Chenoweth. Half-jokingly, Fuller captioned the photo: “Not to be opportunistic, but if you’re itching to fill that #Roseanne timeslot with another former @ABCNetwork show…”

Pushing Daisies, which aired from 2007 through 2009, told the story of a piemaker who used his ability to raise the dead to solve murders. Though it’s a miracle Pushing Daisies lasted two seasons on a major network with that premise at all, Paste listed the cult show on our list of TV shows gone too soon.

Fuller’s push may have been tongue-in-cheek, but ABC will have a big timeslot to fill in its fall lineup. Roseanne dominated network ratings over the course of the broadcast season.

Since Barr’s initial tweet, she has since left Twitter, come back, apologized and blamed Ambien for her remarks. Sanofi, the maker of the drug, tweeted back, “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”

Meanwhile, after the head of ABC parent company Disney Bob Iger called Jarrett to apologize on behalf of Barr, the #covfefe king himself, President Donald Trump, took to Twitter to ask where his apology is for comments made about him on the network.
