Buffy the Vampire Slayer Revival Finally (Probably) Happening at Hulu

It’s happening! Maybe! Buffy is (possibly) so back, baby. After years of false starts and rumors, Hulu is reportedly nearing a pilot order for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to return as Buffy Anne Summers: OG slayer, Class Protector and leader of the Scoobies. Gellar will executive produce and play a supporting role, passing the torch—and the stake—to a new Chosen One.

We were last teased a return to Sunnydale in 2018, when Monica Owusu-Breen (Lost, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) teamed up with Buffy creator and showrunner Joss Whedon for a series reboot that was later shelved. Whedon is not involved in this new project, following allegations of misconduct in 2021. Instead, the next chapter of the Buffyverse will bring in Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning director of Nomadland and Eternals (and a longtime Buffy fan) to direct the pilot. Poker Face showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman will write and executive produce, joined by producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton—all of whom worked on the original series. 20th Television and Searchlight TV will also co-produce.

Can the Buffy franchise rise again without its disgraced creator? Will the whole Buffy concept feel as unfulfilling and disappointing today as The Pink Opaque does when Owen watches it again as an adult in I Saw the TV Glow? With an Oscar winner and the folks behind the excellent Poker Face in charge, and a new slayer on the hunt, we’re feeling cautiously optimistic. In five words or less: Let the slaying begin. Bitch.

And while we’re waiting, make sure to check out our ranking of every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
