Big Talk Studios, the UK production company behind BBC’s The Outlaws, is developing a UK remake of the beloved NBC sitcom Cheers, as reported by Deadline. The production company has tapped BAFTA award nominee Simon Nye (The Durrells in Corfu) to adapt the series. Nye’s additional credits include the ITV series Finding Alice and The Larkins. If the remake is greenlit, Nye will also serve as showrunner.
Though details surrounding the remake have yet to be announced, Kenton Allen, chief executive of Big Talk Studios, shared a few details about the remake with Deadline. “The British pub is an endangered species, so there’s an answer for the ‘Why now?,” he said.
Cheers ended its run on NBC over 30 years ago and received 28 Emmy Awards, including four wins for Best Comedy Series during its 11-season run. Referencing the temporality of the material, Allen noted, “The attitudes of Cheers in the ‘80s are very different to the attitudes of today. So there’s a massive amount of work to be done around taking inspiration from the original characters but creating something fresh.”
Big Talk Studios is currently producing several other projects, including an upcoming Season 2 of the Apple TV+ comedy, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin.
