Kiernan Shipka Turns Teenage Witch in First Teaser for Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Turns out Sally Draper grew up into the badass we always hoped she would become.

Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka leads the first teaser for Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a genuinely spooky reboot of the long-running ‘90s sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch from the team behind Riverdale.

It’s Sabrina’s 16th birthday in the first teaser for Chilling Adventures, that moment in a young woman’s life when she opts into the occult world of witchcraft. By the looks of it, unlike the more lighthearted Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the new reboot won’t be shying away from the horror roots of its Archie Comics source material. We get the Devil’s book, occult rituals and plenty of expressionless teens inducting Sabrina into witchdom. Plus, it seems like Sabrina’s black cat, Salem, won’t be quite the jokester he was in the sitcom.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina shares quite a bit of its DNA with the dark Archie reboot Riverdale, although it won’t be crossing over with the world of the hit CW teen soap. The series was created by Riverdale showrunner and Archie Comics alum Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who executive produces along with Riverdale collaborators Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger. The series comes from CW super-producer Berlanti’s Warner Bros. Television-based Berlanti Productions.

Along with Shipka, the cast includes Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Abigail Cowen, Lachlan Watson, Bronson Pinchot and Gavin Leatherwood.

Riverdale successfully got teens and other loyal fans to care about the famously square Archie universe, and with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it seems that Netflix is looking to shake up the ‘90s legacy of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and recapture some of that same phenomenon. We’ll have to see whether the new reboot finds its audience, but for now, Mad Men fans should be reassured to learn that Shipka is doing just fine.

The first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on Netflix on Oct. 26.
