Series Creator Dan Harmon Says a Community Movie Will Happen
Image via NBCCommunity creator and writer Dan Harmon hinted again at the return of the beloved series via a movie yesterday on Larry King Now.
The show, which ended last year after six seasons, had a large ensemble cast including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Allison Brie, Ken Jeong, Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover, and they’ve all gone separate ways for new (and higher paying) projects, so it would be nothing short of incredible for them to reunite in their old roles at Greendale Community College. Perhaps the most surprising return would be that of Donald Glover, who recently landed his own comedy at FX. Despite the dispersion and independent rise of the actors, Harmon said that he hopes his original cast will be up for a movie someday.
“If I pull out a typewriter right now and write a Community movie just from my own mind, then I have to go through the heartbreak and agony of finding out which of the people are going to show up to make it,” Harmon told King. “Whereas, on the other hand, if I wait for everybody to line up and say, ‘We’re all out of work and ready to do a Community movie!’ well, I guess that’s a bad idea too.”
Harmon talked about a Community movie last year at the ATX Festival in Austin, saying that Yahoo, who hosted the last season of the show on their now-dormant streaming outlet Yahoo Screen, was ready to jump in and make it at the close of the series, but he wasn’t ready. “I can’t think about writing a movie until I miss Community,” he said.
Even though it sounds like he hasn’t even got a script for a Community movie, Harmon left plenty of room for hope, saying to Larry King with confidence, “‘It’ll make a great movie. It’ll happen.” Click here to watch the full clip.
