Danny McBride, John Goodman to Star in HBO Televangelist Comedy

After striking comedy gold with Eastbound and Down and Vice Principals, Danny McBride and his frequent collaborators Jody Hill and David Gordon Green are back at HBO with a potential televangelist comedy.

HBO has given a pilot order to The Righteous Gemstones, created by McBride, who, along with writing and directing the pilot episode, will star in the show alongside John Goodman. The story will take us into the lives of a famous televangelist family, the Gemstones, who have “a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,” per THR.

Goodman—while also working on the Roseanne (minus the Roseanne) spinoff The Conners— will portray the family patriarch, pastor Eli Gemstone, with McBride as his son Jesse Gemstone. While Eli is a well-known force in the game ,with global ministries and an award-winning weekly program, his son is attempting to step out of his shadow and bring his ministry to a more modern audience. We can guess the show will parody the well-known celebrity pastors whose actions don’t always seem so Christ-like, and oh, are we excited to see what McBride has to say.

McBride, Hill and Green will all serve as executive producers on The Righteous Gemstones.
