Daria Creators Imagine Characters’ Lives 20 Years Later

The queen of ‘90s teen angst has been absent from television screens for a while now—the show debuted 20 years ago today—but Daria Morgendorffer and her memorable Lawndale friends continue to live on. If you’ve ever wondered where your favorite anti-social, monotone teen is now, well, you aren’t the only one. Entertainment Weekly was wondering the same thing, so much so that they brought together co-creator Susie Lewis and character designer Karen Disher to reimagine Daria and the gang in all their 2017 glory. Happily, many of the characters are doing just fine—or, at least, how you’d expect.

Daria is living and working in New York City as the only woman writer on a late-night talk show. She lives alone with her black cat named Godzilla, and is still rocking the single life—she’s tried online dating, but it hasn’t really panned out yet. She’s totally over her crush on Trent Lane, who currently lives in Queens with his four bandmates. Yup, he’s still trying to make the whole band thing work out.

Luckily, Daria’s best gal Jane Lane is also kicking it in NYC and living out her dream as an artist. Jane lives with her archeologist husband, who travels a lot. But that’s okay, because it just means more time for the two besties to enjoy art shows and film events. They only talk to each other at these social events, of course.

Daria’s parents, Jake and Helen Morgendorffer, are living it up in retirement, taking cruises and breaking a sweat in their weekly dance classes. Her sister, Quinn, has “consciously uncoupled” from her college sweetheart, and is busy raising her triplets Timmy, Tommy and Teddy in Lawndale. She also has her own YouTube channel “S’mores and Pores,” where she gives advice on desserts and skincare.

The popular kids Brittany and Kevin Thompson are married with five children (of course). Brittany is the weather girl at the local news station, and Kevin is a stay-at-home dad who also dabbles in children’s birthday party entertainment.

“It had been a long time since I watched the show, but this brought back such great memories and reminded me of how much fun it was to create Daria,” Lewis told EW.
