Alex Garland’s Devs Lands FX Limited Series Order, to Air in 2019

Fans of Annihilation and Ex Machina have cause to celebrate today, as FX has picked up acclaimed writer-director Alex Garland’s techno-drama pilot Devs. The eight-episode limited series, slated to debut on FX sometime next year, is led by stars Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina, Maniac) and Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation, Fargo). Garland wrote and directed Devs in its entirety.

“After reading all eight scripts and hearing Alex’s brilliant vision and commitment to direct all of the episodes, it was an easy decision to order Devs to series,” said FX Networks and FX Produtions CEO John Landgraf in a statement.  “Alex is a visionary artist who with his partners has put together a stellar cast.  We are grateful to Alex, Andrew, Allon, Scott, Eli and the brilliant casting team led by Carmen Cuba.”

Said cast also includes Jin Ha (Jesus Christ Superstar Live) , Zach Grenier (The Good Wife, Deadwood), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Lady Bird, Fences), Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim: Uprising, Bad Times at the El Royale) and Alison Pill (American Horror Story: Cult, The Newsroom). Garland will executive produce the limited series alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA TV, Eli Bush and Scott Rudin, with whom he teamed on both Annihilation and Ex Machina. FX Productions will produce Devs.

FX’s announcement contains precious few new plot details—aside from what little we can glean from their brief character bios (keep scrolling for those), the network offers only the same brief synopsis they did when Garland’s pilot was first ordered in March: “In Devs, a young computer engineer, Lily Chan, investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, who she believes are behind the murder of her boyfriend.” Knowing Garland, though, the less we know going in, the better.

Find FX’s full breakdown of Devs’ cast and characters below, see where Garland’s latest film landed on our list of 2018’s best (so far) and stay tuned for more on his much-anticipated new project.
